Coronavirus Vaccine (Covid-19):
Pakistan is expecting to get more than 500,000 doses of Pfizer’s new Coronavirus Vaccine (COVID-19) (2023-24 formula) this month, as the world fighting with the new COVID-19 variation.
According to officials, these doses are allocated for vaccinating high-risk groups, particularly Hajj travelers.
However, before applying the vaccine, health officials must get a new Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap). This is important since the newly developed Pfizer vaccine has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Officials also stated that the FDA’s approval is just for emergency use.
According to a National Institute of Health (NIH) official, Pakistan will receive 200,000 doses of Pfizer’s new COVID-19 vaccine (2023-24 formula) from the US in the coming days.
He went on to say that the modified formula was effective against the currently circulating variations, including Omicron and its sub-variants.
Furthermore, COVAX, an international program aimed at providing COVID-19 vaccinations to individuals all over the world, is expected to offer 300,000 doses to Pakistan.
Although no cases of the JN.1 sub-variant have been identified in Pakistan, health officials aim to vaccinate pilgrims to prevent them from contracting additional COVID-19 variations.
According to the NIH official, they believe:
Before enabling pilgrims to enter Saudi land for Haj, Saudi authorities would need vaccination against Covid-19 using a new mRNA vaccine manufactured by Pfizer or other FDA-approved businesses.
