Action against Non Filers

Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Malik Amjed Zubair Tiwana, refuted on Wednesday that the FBR has delayed the process of preventing mobile SIM cards and phones and cutting off non-filers‘ gas and power connections.

Tiwana informed the media at the end of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance meeting on Wednesday at Parliament House that the exercise will begin this month and will not be postponed until March 2024 to bring Non filers into the tax net.

In an effort to broaden the tax base, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has gained more authority, allowing it to cut off utilities and disable mobile SIMs in the event that a return is not submitted in response to sent letters.

The decision was made subsequent to Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reaching a staff-level agreement about the initial assessment of a $3 billion bailout.

In the recent fiscal year, there were only about 4.9 million return filers out of a total population of 240 million. To increase the tax base, it is very likely to uncover prospective non-filers or tax evaders among the two million return filers who filed zero returns.
